As poverty is the main development challenge for the overall development of Nepal and microfinance is becoming globally an effective tool for poverty reduction there is tremendous scope of microfinance services in Nepal, rural areas in particular. Nepal being a least developed country has abundant scope of micro finance services that will help in generating income of people below in the poverty line. Nepal, since 1974, has been undertaking different micro financing models to cater the credit need of the rural poor thereby involving them in income generation. Apart from this, the existing micro finance services are mostly concentrated their activities in Tarai (Plain) areas. The Hills and mountain areas are not yet accessed by such financial services. In this background, Sarathi Nepal Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha has been established to provide financial services to the poor people of Hill, Mountain and Tarai areas of the Mid and Eastern Region of the country.
Sarathi Nepal Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha Ltd(SNLB), Previously Naya Nepal Laghu Bitta Bikash Bank was established in 2009 as a "D" class regional level financial institution with the Nepal Rastra Bank under BAFI Act, 2063 (2006). Later, in 2018 , NNLB has changed its name to Naya Nepal Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha ltd. as of Bank and Financial Institution Act 2073.
